-Fern Howell-

Fern Louise Howell, 82, of Washington, formerly of Columbus Junction, died Monday, March 10, 2008 at her home, under the loving care of her family and hospice. Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Pastors Ed Parker and Bill Jamison officiated the services. Burial was in the Columbus City Cemetery. Casketbearers were Roger Wheeler, Dale Wheeler, Tim Fitchner, Kevin Lapour, Brent Elkin, T.J. Howell and Jacob Howell. Honorary Casketbearers were Brenda Lapour, Niki Slutts, Laura Juhl and Megan Hamm. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in Fern’s name. Fern Louise Messer was born July 27, 1925 in Wayland, Iowa, the daughter of James Lawrence and Pearl (Haifley) Messer. She graduated in 1943 from Packwood and then married Ross Elkin, Sr. and they were later divorced. She then married Marion Howell on January 1, 1948 in Monmouth, Illinois. She lived and farmed for 50 years in the Columbus Junction area. She was involved with the Midwest Old Threshers for many years. She was a member of the Columbus Junction United Presbyterian Church and the Shellbark Club. She was also a caregiver at the Winfield Care Center and retired from Sheller-Globe after 17 years of service. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

Fern will be deeply missed by her five children; Sandy Lapour of Marshalltown, Ross Elkin and his wife, Karen of Wapello, Linda Wheeler and her husband, Ed of Rockwell City, Terri Fitchner and her husband, Larry of Conesville and Tom Howell and his wife, Janice of Washington; 11 grandchildren and 17 ½ great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Schulz and her husband, Ray of Crawfordsville and Bernice Lee of Winfield; three sisters-in-law, Delores Messer of Winfield, Kathrin Lieberknecht of Columbus Junction and Lois Fullmer and her husband, Ed of Meadsville, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion; and one brother, Charles.
