William Lewis “Bill” McGinnis, age 90, of Washington, Iowa died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at the University of Iowa Hospitals following a short illness.

Memorial services were held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June16, 2012 at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Stiles officiating.  Private family interment took place at the Columbus City Cemetery.  Memorials have been established to Lending Hands or Washington American Legion Post 29.  The Jones-Eden Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.  Online condolences may be sent for Bill’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com.

Bill was born on January 18, 1921 the son of William Alexander and Georgia (Lewis) McGinnis in Washington County, Iowa near Sockum Ridge.  He graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1939 and attended Washington Jr. College for two years.  Bill later attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  Bill was united in marriage to Marian Alice Fowler on June 4, 1943 in Sigourney, Iowa.

Bill served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II as part of the third army from Normandy to Berlin.  During his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.  After Bill returned from the service, he farmed north of Ainsworth for nearly sixty years.

Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church in Washington and was active in the Washington Democratic Party.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Marian “Mickey” Marsolais and husband, Dr. Byron and their daughter, Annette of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and daughter, Sara “Sally” Caruso of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho and her stepchildren, Rebekah, Frank, and Molly.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marian in 2005; daughter, Susan Kathleen McGinnis; sister, Martha Norton; and sister, Sara A. Drury.
