- Alton Dean Griffin-

Alton Dean Griffin, age 83, of Columbus Junction, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2012, at Colonial Manor following a lengthy illness.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 15, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Columbus City cemetery with pastor Earlene Lekwa officiating.  A luncheon will be held following the services at the American Legion in Columbus Junction.

Alton (Griff) was born on August 21, 1928, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Carl Griffin and Ida (Fullerton) Griffin.  He graduated from Letts High School in 1946.  He served in the US Army for two years during the Korean War and was released in 1953.  On June 6, 1953, he was united in marriage to Myrtle Marlene Buster at the First Baptist Church in Muscatine, Iowa.  Marlene passed away on May 5, 1981.  Alton remarried in February 16, 1991 to Devona Black.

He owned the Standard Station in Columbus Junction prior to moving south of Columbus City, to farm for several years.  Later, he worked for Natural Gas Pipeline, Farmers Elevator in Wapello and Farm Service in Columbus Junction.

He will be deeply missed by his family and all that truly knew him; always quick with a smile and shake of the head as he enjoyed the banter of good conservation and quick wit.  His world was his family and was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He loved farming and being outdoors, he was an avid fisherman and golfer.  He also enjoyed watching the Hawkeyes, the Cubs and the Bears.

His truck had many miles put on it as he puttered around the countryside checking in on people.  He was a man that was generous with his time, talents and always had a way to tell you to be patient with life, even though he was not always himself.

Alton is survived by his wife, Devona, of Columbus Junction; his daughter, Susan (Roger) Edwards; his son, Gregory (Sara) Griffin – all of Columbus Junction; four grandchildren, Wendy (Rick) Casel of LaMotte, Iowa, Wade (Chandra) Edwards of Columbus Junction, Mackenzie and Mitchell Griffin of Columbus Junction; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Carson Casel and Alanna Edwards; three stepchildren, Steve Black, Rodney (Liz) Black and Joyce (Denny) Spitznogle; three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ida; two brothers, Donald and Robert; sisters, Elizabeth, Beverly and Shirley; one step-granddaughter; and his first wife, Marlene.

In lieu of flowers, a general memorial will be established with the family.
