-Robert William Hynes Jr.-

Robert (Bob) William Hynes Jr., the son of the late Robert William Hynes, Sr. and Evelyn Marie Masonholder Hynes, passed away on January 24, 2013 at San Miguel Villa, located in Concord, California.

Bob was born on March 29, 1935 on the Masonholder farm, southeast of Columbus City in Louisa County, Iowa.  Bob started his education at Pleasant View Country School, located near the Masonholder farm. Later he attended the Columbus Junction Schools and graduated with the class of 1953.  While at Columbus Schools he was the photographer for the school yearbook and participated in plays and theatrical productions, chorus, track, and football. A quote from his school years was, “If there is mischief brewing, Bob is at the bottom of it.”

Following high school graduation, he joined the Navy where he was a photographer, stationed in Korea and traveled many other places around the Pacific Rim.  Bob had a real love for the Asian style.  Following the service, he attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City.  He appeared in University plays and was instrumental in the Big Brother, Big Sister program there.  One summer in the 1960’s he went to California with a group of friends and ended up spending the rest of his life there.

Bob’s work years were spent in the accounting department of one of the biggest construction companies in San Francisco, CA.  He continued his love of art, photography, theater arts, and old movies.

His parents, Robert and Evelyn Hynes Sr., preceded Bob in death.  Also preceding him were his grandparents:  William J. Hynes, Nettie Johnson Hynes Eden, and step-grandfather, George C. Eden; and Guy and Mary Elizabeth (Bessie) Ross Masonholder.Other family members who have passed were two uncles Ross (Wilma) Masonholder, Paul (Jeannette) Masonholder, and Darlene Masonholder (Ralph) Lowe.

Memorial services for Robert Hynes Jr. will be held at the United Methodist Church in Columbus Junction at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, March 9th, 2013.   Full military rites will be observed.  Following the service, coffee and cookies will be served for a time of remembrance of Bob.
