-Frederick Bernard Carlson-

Frederick Bernard Carlson, age 81, of Wapello, passed away Thursday evening, January 10, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington surrounded by his loving family and his little best friend, Missy Sue.  The son of Adolph Bernard and Harriett Seamor Carlson, he was born on March 3, 1931 in Redding, Pennsylvania.  Fred married Vonnie Gerst on September 30, 1959 in Burlington.

He served in the US Army and the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.  Fred was a welder and had helped build the Rath Packing Plant in Columbus Junction and then worked there for 26 years and continued working for the IBP plant, retiring when he was 67.
Fred was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  He coached Little League for many years and was very involved with 4-H and wrestling with his kids and grandchildren.  He was honored as TOPS King for the State of Iowa and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, yodeling, playing the harmonica, and attending the county and state fairs.

His family includes his wife, Vonnie; a daughter, Carrie and Lonny Hansford of Letts; five sons, Craig and Tammy Carlson of Columbus Junction, Kent, Cory, Kevin, and Kurt Carlson all of Wapello; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Mae Lotz of Dover, Delaware. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Geraldine Green; 3 brothers, George, Gerald, and Jim Carlson; and a great-grandson, Tyson.

The funeral for Fred Carlson was held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with Pastor Randy Gearhart officiating.  Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery. 

Friends called from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family met friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established with portions to benefit the Wapello Wrestling and the Louisa County 4-H.
