-James Esley VanAuken-

MUSCATINE, Iowa—James Esley VanAuken passed away April 23 2012, at Trinity Hospital in Muscatine. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to Trinity Pathways Hospice of Muscatine 1609 Cedar Street Muscatine Iowa 52761 in James’ name.

James was born March 16th 1937 to Howard B. and Fern Z. [Diller] VanAuken in Toddtown, Iowa. He was a graduate of Columbus High School and a lifelong resident of the Columbus Junction area mostly in Fredonia where he served as a council memberfor many years.

He married the love of his life. Betty Blodgett on April 26,1957, with Bill and Karen Hills standing up with them. They would be married almost 55 years before her passing on March 28 2012.

Jim worked for Louisa County with his dad until Rath Packing came to town. He then worked for Rath from the day the plant opened until the day it closed. Along his way to retirement he worked for Rueckert Sanitation and IBP also. Jim was a avid fisherman and coon hunter, he spent many a night hunting with his buddy, Dean Solomon. He also enjoyed going to yard sales and auctions, he loved to get a bargain.  Sunday mornings he could be found at his best friends’ shop, George Bell, getting the Sunday paper and having a pop with all the guys.

He is survived by a son Wayne and wife MaryEllen VanAuken of Muscatine, daughter Sharrelle and husband Bill Nelson of Fredonia. Five grandchildren, Thomas and Azure VanAuken of Fredonia, Betsy Baker and fiancee, Dave Tubandt of Muscatine, Joellen Weikert and boyfriend, Chad Kemper of Muscatine, Jeremiah and Corriene Nelson of Wayland, Tiffany and Tony Turner of Columbus Junction, ten great-grandkids, two brothers, Mark VanAuken and Chuck VanAuken and a sister, Edna Mae Powers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers, mother and father-in-law, and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
